Annie and AbnerGwen's Dogs

When my husband, Mark, got very sick I realized I needed a special support system …..I needed a dog.

Annie, a scary smart German Shepherd, came into my life. She was with me during my husband's illness and death. We shared many conversations, tears and laughter….she was my rock. Not a dog to be taken lightly, Annie was a fierce protector. She foiled two home invasions thus saving my life twice. She never wavered in her loyalty. She was brave, she was strong, she was mine.

When Mark was dying of leukemia Annie would go upstairs to the bedroom and stretch her body along his to keep him warm. She had a way of knowing when others needed her. Annie was a gentle soul filled with spirit.

Annie died of bloat in June of 08.

Abner is a calm, gentle, confident dog. I picked him up at the airport when he was twelve weeks old only to realize I couldn’t lift his crate….he was a huge puppy. Abner took the tumbles Annie gave him with ease.

Graceful is not an adjective I would use to describe Abner but thoughtful, compassionate and gentle giant fit him well. His needs and wants have always been simple…family, food and a tennis ball.

Being so large (125 lbs), his forceful look precedes any need to protect.
One summer evening he brought me a tiny bird that had fallen out of its nest. The baby bird was nestled snuggly in his large, soft mouth. He dropped the bird in my lap and watched proudly as it flapped its tiny wings.

Abner was lost when Annie died. He went into a deep depression… not even wanting his beloved tennis ball. I knew he needed a companion.

Emma, a sable German Shepherd, arrived as a very small (she was the runt of the litter), not-so-attractive puppy. However, her personality is one of confidence, a knowing of what she wants and the determination to get it, love for the tennis ball and is a snuggle bug with nerves of steel. Emma loves the world. Her gentle, soft eyes invite interaction with others and her puppy caterpillar look has turned into a stunning Shepherd. She radiates love, excitement, intelligence and compassion.

Annie, Abner and Emma are like all dogs….they bless those who are open to their love.
